Supporting Businesses and Training Institutions in Implementing the New Small Engine Mechanic Trade

Introduction:

Shaping the Future of the Outdoor Power Equipment Industry

The lack of trained mechanics has been a recurring challenge in the Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) industry, leading to ongoing issues like costly repairs, frequent comebacks, and customer dissatisfaction. As a problem solver by nature, I, Melt van Schoor, recognized the need for a formal trade qualification to address this gap and uplift the professionalism of the industry. With almost a decade of involvement as a national executive committee member of the OPE Professionals Association of South Africa (OPPASA), I took the initiative to develop the Small Engine Mechanic trade, working alongside industry leaders and regulatory bodies to bring this trade to life.

Addressing a Long-Standing Industry Problem

The issue of unqualified mechanics often results in "comebacks"—products returned after repairs because they were not fixed correctly. This not only leads to financial losses for dealerships but also risks the loss of clients due to repeated issues. Additionally, untrained mechanics may recommend unnecessary parts replacements or suggest costly product replacements. Establishing a national qualification provides a structured approach to training, allowing dealerships to set wage standards based on qualifications and experience, leading to a more professional and sustainable workforce across South Africa.

Driving the Industry Transformation

My journey began with a presentation to MERSETA, bringing attention to the need for structured training within the OPE industry. As a result, I was invited to form a board of subject matter experts to develop training modules for the Small Engine Mechanic trade. Key industry players like STIHL, HONDA, Talisman, CPHA, Yamaha, and OPPASA collaborated in this process, which involved multiple iterations until final approval by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority). We are now in the final stages of trade test development, in partnership with organizations like HONDA, FEZAMAX, NAMB (National Artisan Moderation Body), and OPPASA.

Recognition and Leadership in the Industry

On 28 August 2023, I was officially appointed by the Acting Chief Director of INDLELA as a member of the Technical Working Group for the development of a national trade test for trades listed under section 26B of the Skills Development Act. This appointment is a testament to my leadership and continued dedication to improving industry standards.
