What Is Success? And Why Most People Get It Wrong

Success. It’s a word that sparks ambition, fuels dreams, and yet remains one of the most misunderstood concepts in the world. Too often, people chase after someone else’s definition of success, only to find themselves feeling unfulfilled, frustrated, and burnt out. But what if success isn’t about wealth, fame, or ticking off society’s checklist? What if it’s about something deeper, something more personal?

The Many Faces of Success

Great minds throughout history have offered powerful insights into what success truly means:

  1. Winston Churchill: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."

  2. Dale Carnegie: "Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get."

  3. Maya Angelou: "Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it."

  4. Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."

  5. Henry David Thoreau: "Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it."

  6. Robert Collier: "Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out."

  7. George S. Patton: "Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom."

  8. Albert Einstein: "Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value."

  9. George Sheehan: "Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be."

  10. Vidal Sassoon: "The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary."

Bruce Lee had a unique perspective on success. He believed success was a deeply personal journey:

  • "Success means doing something sincerely and wholeheartedly. It is a constant process of growth."

  • "To each person, success means something different. It is your duty to find out what it means to you."

The Price of Chasing the Wrong Success

Imagine a talented artist who abandons painting to pursue a corporate career because it’s the "safe" choice. Or an entrepreneur who follows a traditional business model instead of innovating with their true passion. They may achieve financial stability or external recognition, but inside, they feel lost. Over time, this misalignment manifests as stress, frustration, fatigue, health issues, or even depression.

If you’re not living the life you were meant to live, your body and mind will send you warning signals. Are you listening?

Success: A Definition Worth Living By

Success isn’t just about personal gain—it’s about impact. As I define it:

"Success is discovering the life you were meant to live and living it fully—creating waves that ripple beyond your own lifetime, inspiring future generations to rise even higher." – Melt van Schoor
